This coming June 2007, Cebu will have become one of the major hotspots of I.T. development in Asia. Already, it is the site of major international contact center operators; it has a notable presence of animation and software developers; and it boasts of the most successful I.T. alliance of industry and academe in the country, among others.

What will put Cebu firmly on the world’s I.T. map, however, is the C.E.BU. ICT 2007 International Conference & Exhibition. This monumental event will be held in Metro Cebu from 26 to 28 June 2007. To give you a bird’s-eye view of the event’s overarching objective, it is subtitled “The Asian Hubs in the Service of the Global ICT Industry“. And the battle cry is: “Pioneering Landmark ICT Collaboration in Asia“.

But having ‘battle’ and ‘collaboration’ in one sentence is an oxymoron. My bad. Cebu is, in fact, working towards coopetition now: gainful competition and cooperation among other I.T. hubs in the Philippines, as well as all over Asia. Recognizing early on the borderless nature of the I.T. and I.T.-Enabled Services industry, the Queen City has embarked on a potentially historic undertaking to consolidate Asian strengths and resources.

CEBU ICT 2007 won’t merely be a showcase of what Cebu has to offer. It aims to show the world what they, Metro Manila, Baguio, Iloilo, Davao, and other areas with active I.T. industries can provide. As well, India, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian neighbors will be participating this June. In fact, these foreign delegations won’t simply be exhibitors or observers: they are committed implementing partners of the now-ongoing regional collaborative effort.

In a truly landmark event, CEBU ICT 2007 will also host the first-ever Asian Summit of IT Leaders. This summit will assemble all the key industry players from across Asia, and hopefully be able to collate and analyze the various IT-related concerns, issues, plans, etc. of each participating Asian nation. To quote from the event’s literature:

In the spirit of cooperation, each participating country shall be assigned a topic … focusing on Individual Country Vision, Experiences, and Development Model, highlighting strengths, limitations, and suggested areas for collaboration specifically with respect to:

    1. Investment Promotion
    2. Innovation Ecosystem Advancement
    3. Human Capital Development
    4. Digital Inclusion Intervention

The event is one of the highlights of the Cebu Business Month, and is being organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce & Industry, with the support of the province and city of Cebu, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Trade & Industry, Bureau of Investments, Commission on ICT, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
