CrunchBase.com This is good news to all followers of global IT trends, especially tech bloggers who watch movements among technology companies:  CrunchBase, the tech company database owned by TechCrunch.com, is now publishing their very own freely-accessible API!

To put it simply, CrunchBase is an impressive repository of IT companies and their technologies. It is an excellent starting point for researching into such companies. For example, if you were out to get an overview of Google Inc., you would do well to start here (go ahead, click on the link!).

On that page, you’ll find not only the mundane information everybody already knows about the world’s #1 search engine company, but very detailed data. You’ll get a comprehensive list of the people behind the company, acquisitions, milestones (curiously, this piece of information for Google is extremely limited at CrunchBase), their product offerings, list of competitors, and much more.

Here’s another CrunchBase page, this time for Yahoo!.

The CrunchBase API employs JSON to output data to whomever wishes to make use of their data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) calls itself “a lightweight data-interchange format.” So, something akin to XML, I suppose. What you get is something like this when you access the CrunchBase API.

This means that we information hounds can directly reference this valuable resource and make our own online publications look more spiffy. All you need to do is figure out how to make your Web site or blog connect to the CrunchBase database via JSON, and you’re good to go!

    Thanks very much, CrunchBase!

Now, if only a kind soul would develop a WordPress plugin for this…
