I was delighted when I found out that this blog was given the #1 spot by Ratified.org in its daily assessment of blogs in the Philippine blogosphere. This top position means that IT talks! garnered the highest positive change in rank.
Yesterday, my blog stood at the 387th place among all Ratified blogs in the Philippines. Today, it’s at the 113th place. Wow! A jump of 274 points! Google PageRank for IT talks! is also now at PR4 (but, yeah, it’s just a number…). •••Read on»

The 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit (MBS1) last 27 October 2007 was an unambiguous success. One indication is the number of participants: 97, not counting the organizers, resource speakers and guests. Another is the amount of copy now published on the Web — click here to see the links. For a first-time event — MBS1 was a pioneering effort at gathering bloggers from all over the country for a singular objective — I believe it was a major achievement. The theme, Spotlight Mindanao: Blogging for Culture, Identity & Understanding, was very apt: it proved to be the accompanying statement of all the Summit’s activities. •••Read on»

Today marks a first as The Usual Suspects host the 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit in Davao City. The purpose of the Summit is to encourage bloggers to wield their technological tool called “blogging” for the betterment of Mindanao’s global image. The theme “Spotlight Mindanao: Blogging for Culture, Identity & Understanding” sums it all up.

Donald Lim, president of Yehey!, delivered an insightful talk on “new media” during one of the breakout sessions of the 6th Mindanao ICT Congress last 24 October 2007. While the presentation revolved around Yehey.com offerings, what Lim said about emerging new media rings true across the world.
What is new media?
Blogs are a part of it. In fact, they are a good example why it’s called “new media”. Up until several years ago, having your own website was costly and often required technical skills. Today, powerful and user-friendly blogging platforms (such as WordPress.com and Blogger) are freely available to anyone who cares to publish himself online. Not only has this resulted in an explosion of content (Technorati estimates that there are currently more than 75 million blogs), but aso in the perceptible weakening of the reach of traditional media. •••Read on»

Recently I was told that a company I’d written about, Damosa Land (Davao’s first IT park developer), had my blog post in question printed out and disseminated among their staff. I’m not sure if it was as a matter of a directive by management or just the initiative of some employees, but the fact remains that I’d made an impression.
This is exactly the kind of result that I was batting for when I took up blogging. While I had similar feedback when I had just my “offline” column at Sun•Star Davao, this was more immediate. And it wasn’t just my post that mattered, but the attendant comments as well seem to have lent validity to my words. Or at least more weight in the eyes of Damosa Land.
I intend to continue advocating positive change in the IT industry, and I have WordPress to thank for this new-found voice!

During the launch of the 6th MICT Congress last 25 July, Commission on ICT Acting Commissioner Mon Ibrahim presented some challenges to Mindanao’s economic development. One of which is the challenge of improving Mindanao’s negative image. Ibrahim said that overcoming this obstacle will result in better opportunities for Mindanao’s I.T. industry to flourish.
Well, one very effective way to address this need is to have more and more people writing about Mindanao. The best medium for this is the Internet. And the best tool the blog.
The Mindanao Bloggers Summit, which will be held during the MICT Congress this October, has a very apt theme: “Spotlight Mindanao: Blogging for Culture, Identity and Understanding“. The fundamental idea behind the Summit is to promote the use of blogs as a powerful tool for bringing out to the world the true image of Mindanao. Also, the Summit aims to foster understanding among the various peoples and cultures in Mindanao. •••Read on»

It appears there’s something brewing in the Pinoy blogosphere. Abe Olandres reported over at Yugatech that a new issue has seemingly arisen from the recently-concluded Philippine Blog Awards: whether blogging is a right or a privilege. My take on that post and the accompanying comments: before saying anything, people should try to look up the true meanings of these two words first, then see what sets them apart. •••Read on»

SMS communication — or "texting" — has reportedly laid waste to our English spelling abilities. E-mail is said to have bastardized traditional letter-writing formats. And now, blogging? No, there’s nothing that blogging has done to our communication skills. But, I saw this article on the Web that’s dishing out how-to’s on blog-writing. Most of it was OK, but there was one piece of advice there that I just couldn’t stomach: that one should write using bullet points!
